Transmissibility Of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Infection Through Blood Transfusion From Blood Donors With Occult HBV Infection
The point of this article was to determine the transmissibility of HBV in blood donors of OHB through blood transfusions. Out of 217,595 blood donors, 67 donors were found to have OHB. There were 10^4 copies of HBV DNA per mL in the blood. After transfusion, 92% had no HBV infection. In 3 of the 4 that maintained the infection, the donor HBV excluded transmission through transfusion. The last one had a 95% sequence homology with her donor HBV. This allows the author to come to the conclusion that the HBV was contracted due to blood transmission. In 7 of the 92% that did not have HBV, their blood contained high levels of anti-HB which suggests that they had a recent transfusion-related HBV immune response.
