First Documented Transmission Of Trypanosoma Cruzi Infection Through Blood Transfusion In A Child With Sickle-Cell Disease In Belgium
A 7-year-old boy in Belgium who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease in Belgium began needing blood transfusions about once a month around the age of four. The boy had been infected by T. cruzi because the blood cells that were transfused into his system were donated by a man who had lived in Brazil and then moved to Belgium. This transmission was detected after the systematic testing and screening of the donor. However, the T. cruzi screening in European countries has been flawed. This was the first case of T. cruzi transmission through blood transfusion. After he was infected, however, he remained asymptomatic.

Interestingly enough, the parasitic DNA was undetectable through PCR. Also, this boy had to continue to receive blood transfusions as this was his only way to survive until he received a bone marrow transplant. This article concludes that it is possible for one to be infected by a parasite through a blood transfusion when being treated with hydroxyurea for sickle-cell disease.
